President's Letter
Dear CCA Friends and Neighbors,
I’m very happy to be taking over as the newest president of the Caril-
lon Civic Association. Ed Andrews and Jim Beck did a wonderful job as
co-presidents over the past year, and I will surely rely on their expertise
to guide me as I transition into my new role.
There are a lot of exciting things going on in the Carillon neighborhood
this Summer. We have quite a few new residents, and I welcome you all
to our beautiful neighborhood! Whether you are new or have lived here
for years, I encourage you to get involved in the neighborhood and the
CCA. There are some great events coming up to help you meet neighbors
while enjoying the nice weather.
In the coming weeks, there will be numerous free concerts and theatre
performances at Dogwood Dell as part of the 58th annual Festival of Arts.
I also hope to see many of you on August 5th at National Night Out, a
barbecue for our neighborhood that also includes our local law enforce-
ment officers and city officials. These are both great opportunities to
meet some of our new neighbors, as well as to catch up with long-time
residents. I hope you all have a fantastic summer!
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Latimer

Congratulations are also due to the McFaddens on
the nomination of their house at 3233 Condie Street
as our June Yard of the Month. Neighbors appreci-
ate the effort to keep the street looking beautiful!
We encourage our Carillon neighbors to nominate
fellow residents for Yard of the Month by e-mail-
ing nominations to [email protected] or by
contacting Melissa Dilworth at 358-9279. The cho-
sen yard is acknowledged with a yard sign for the
month and a mention in the upcoming newsletter.
The CCA would like to congratulate the Butlers
of 3206 French Street on their home being cho-
sen as the CCA May Yard of the Month. The hard
work and diligence they have put in is obvious
and the results are gorgeous. Thank you!
CCA YARDS OF THE MONTH
The rescue and ongoing restoration of 125-year-old Marburg House at 3020
Rugby Road is the subject of a recent article in Richmond BizSense, “Byrd
Park Home Dodges Demolition” by Brandy Brubaker (6/17/14). The article
MaRBURG iN the news
discusses the recent history of events
regarding the property, including the
purchase of the land and the initial
plans to bulldoze the 1880s farm-
house. Current owner and leader of
the restoration effort William Lipps is
interviewed, saying he hopes to main-
tain the home’s original character.
“When you walk in, it feels old, it feels
grand.” Lipps says the Marburg House
is the Carillon’s oldest standing residence. You can find the article at

MEMORIAL GARDEN restoration
Among the lovely beautification projects recently sponsored by CCA is the reno-
vation of the memorial garden at the intersection of Rugby and Garrett. The land-
scaped bed of dogwood trees, holly bushes, and roses was completed in time to
mark the 30th anniversary of the site. On June 3, 1984, Carillon neighbors and
As noted in the recent commendation from the Virginia General Assembly, CCA has
a long tradition of philanthropy. Indeed, since 1972, our neighborhood association
has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars through proceeds earned from Arts
in the Park. Over 130 Richmond charities and service organizations, as well as our
local school, library, and park have benefitted.
This outstanding record of giving continues. Over this
past year, the CCA Board approved discretionary do-
nations to: John B. Cary School (Fall Festival); Historic
Garden Week (Westover Road event); Richmond Nativ-
ity Pageant; and City Parks and Recreation (repairing
the Byrd Park Tot Lot). And special grants, nominated
by Carillon neighbors, were awarded to three non-prof-
its: Richmond’s Blue Sky Fund (sending urban children
to summer camps and outdoor events); EnRichmond
(supporting Richmond City parks, recreation, and cultural arts events); and Child-
Savers/Memorial Child Guidance Clinic (providing comprehensive mental health
and childhood development services). Remember: your volunteer efforts at Arts in
the Park help our larger community in infinite ways. Thank you!

when it relocated to the Carillon neighborhood.
Congratulations to Asia, Julius, and Monay
and best wishes for the future!

Our Thoughts and Sympathies
Our sympathy to the family of Rachel
Walker, a longtime resident of the
3200 block of French Street. Mrs.
Walker, who would have turned 90 in
August, died on May 30th. She was
the mother of Marie Johnson and
Edward Reed. She was preceded in
death by her son, Winston Reed, Jr.
and her husand, Willie Walker. Mrs.
Walker had ten grandchildren, sev-
eral great-grandchildren, and many
extended family. A well-known ad-
vocate of voter registration and civil
rights, Mrs. Walker received many
certificates and awards in recognition
of her efforts. She enjoyed travel,
among other interests and hobbies.
Mrs. Walker will be sorely missed by
her family and friends.
Condolences are offered to the family
of Joe Squire, Sr. of the 3200 block
of Douglasdale Road, who has died
at age 72. Joe was a member of the
Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club
and an avid golfer, receiving many
trophies in various tournaments.
The Squire family has resided in
the Carillon neighborhood for more
than 40 years. Joe was preceded in
death by his son, Joe Squire, Jr. He
is survived by his wife, Delores, and
two daughters, Anna Smith and Neja
White and by a large extended family,
including four grandchildren.

of 3122 Bute Lane passed away on
May 6. He was 70 years old. He
leaves behind his partner, Maria
Brown, her daughter Tamara Brown
and Tamara’s two children.We extend
our condolences to the family.
